From July 8 through August 14, , in the Viterbo region of Italy about 43 miles from Rome , the countryside town of Soriano nel Cimino and city of Nepi will host the 9th edition of the Tuscia in Jazz Festival. For the past eight years, Tuscia in Jazz has been considered one of the most important international jazz festivals, as well as an important vehicle to promote the beautiful region with its Etruscan roots, Roman history, medieval hill towns and unspoiled lakes and forests. Tuscia in Jazz has extended its branches significantly: with a record label to release recordings of its unique live performances, by adding workshops with world-renown pianist Kenny Barron and rising-star drummer Francisco Mela, and incorporating the annual Jimmy Woode Award for bass playing. The festival has been strongly supported by the local administration of Soriano and it now returns to the squares of the centro storico and thanks to their continued support, all the concerts are free. The Jimmy Woode Award for bass playing is an integral part of the festival proceedings at Tuscia in Jazz. It was at that moment they decided to create a scholarship award for young, talented musicians, starting with the Tuscia in Jazz Festival, and through which the memory of one of the greatest bass players of our century, his music and his family would be honored and carried on. Other than the change in name, we have also changed the venue, moving to a fixed location in the heart of the Monti Cimini, the beautiful Soriano nel Cimino. The festival has been strongly supported by the local administration of Soriano and it now returns to the squares of the historical centre, and thanks to the administration's continous support, all the concerts are free. Born in Ronciglione in as Ronciglione Jazz, it was obvious after the first few years that the festival needed an international name. In addition to these patrons, we have our regular international sponsors: Grappa Zanin, Warsteiner Beer, and financial organizations such as Carivit. Today, with its new name, Tuscia in Jazz, the Festival has become a product of 'Tuscia' and an important vehicle for the worldwide promotion of this beautiful area of Etruscan origin, full of Roman history, mediaeval hill towns and unspoiled lakes and forests. This year from the 17th of July through to the 2nd of August, Soriano nel Cimino will become one of the world's Jazz capitals and for 20 days, artists from all over the world will be performing on its stage. International and European premiers to delight both passionate Jazz followers and newcomers to this great 19th century melody.
Tuscia in Jazz Festival, has now reached its eleventh year of activity and besides being deeply rooted in the Province of Viterbo and surroundings, Lower Etruria, Italy it also holds a strong international dimension and vocation. Every year the greatest stars of the jazz international scene, students travelling from locations as far as Mexico and Australia and passionate jazz fans coming at times from hundreds of kilometres away, gather in the locations of the Tuscia in jazz festival. In this beautiful scenario, music and namely jazz are of very high quality and nevertheless not considered as an elitarian rite but, rather, a joyful event open to all. Having started in in the small medieval town of Ronciglione, NW of Rome, thanks to the crazy passion of a small group of courageous, Tuscia in Jazz festival is presently spread out to ten towns of the Province of Viterbo, including the homonymous town Viterbo. The festival offers over musical events — for the great majority free of charge all concerts held outdoors are free master classes attended by an average of students per year, and has expanded to an intense record production of its events, which is also internationally distributed. It must be also highlighted that the Tuscia in Jazz Festival hosts the Jimmy Woode European Jazz Award, dedicated to the memory of the famous bass player and to the specific role of European contribution to jazz. This competition, open to young musicians under 30, awards the winners with the chance of playing together with the big shots of the jazz scene and to eventually record their work with them. More recently, the TIJ festival has started a collaboration with the Australian and Canadian jazz scenes in order to create occasions for the next coming future collaborations.
